While there are some human foods that are not safe for cats or dogs, carrots are not one of them.

Carrots have been around for ages and are rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients, which are thought to help protect the heart and reduce the risk of cancer. The vitamin A in carrots helps the liver flush out toxins from your dog’s body. It reduces the bile and fat in the liver. The fibers present in carrots help clean out the colon and hasten waste movement. They are packed with beta-carotene, a precursor to Vitamin A, which is important to good vision, especially night vision.

When given to your dog raw, carrots can help support dental health by gently scraping the teeth and preventing plaque buildup. However, keep in mind that, from a purely nutritional standpoint, lightly cooking or steaming them work best. Dogs cannot metabolize the nutrients of raw carrots as the carrot is protected by a thin wall of cellulose. You can make frozen carrot treats with either lightly cooked or raw carrots.

While there are many benefits to giving your dog carrots, moderation is the key because they contain Vitamin A which is a fat soluble vitamin and can build up in the body and become toxic.

Cats can also eat carrots not so much as treats, but in a balanced natural feline diet.
