Cleaning Muddy Paws

If you are lucky to have a dog that likes his paws touched, then cleaning mud off of them should be easy.  If you have a puppy, this would be the best time to start doing this.  Try to touch and massage your puppy's paws as often as you can.  One regret I had was not introducing booties to Kumason when he was a puppy.  This would have made it easier in the winter with the salt on the roads.  However, I did find a non toxic wax made especially for pets called Musher's Secret that I apply directly to his paw pads to prevent salt burns.  It works great.

Akitas clean and groom themselves like cats.  Whenever Kumason and I come back from a walk after it rains, his paws and bottom portion of his legs get really muddy.  He is also a dog that loves to 'mark' and kick his back legs after he does his business.   I've since learned to stand clear, otherwise I would be a dirty muddy mess too.

Keeping a wash cloth, towels and and a pot of water [warm in the winter] by your front door is a good idea. This way, you can clean your dog's legs and paws as soon as you get home.  One day when Kumason and I were coming inside after it rained, he left such a beautiful paw print on the towel I put by the door.  I took a picture of it and now it is a piece of artwork on my wall.
