Dremeling Puppy’s Nails

Himeko is 14 weeks old. I mistakenly said 14 months in the video below. I got her at 8 1/2 weeks old and started dremeling her nails the next week.

The key to dremeling your puppy’s nails is starting early. I started dremeling Himeko’s nails at 9 weeks old. The key to success is to introduce the dremel early on and make it a fun, rewarding and non threatening experience, something your puppy will look forward to. Having a high value treat only given at dremel time is a must. I use an elk antler for Himeko. For my 4 year old Akita Kumason, I started with a meaty bone but was afraid it would splinter and it was just too greasy so I switched to adding creamy peanut butter inside of a rubber toy. Kumason was very scared of the dremel at first unlike Himeko. Every puppy will be different. I got Kumason at 16 weeks old and didn’t start dremeling his nails until a few weeks later so he was a lot older than Himeko. Practicing every day is important so that your puppy can get used to the sound and sensation of the dremel. I also dremeled Kumason’s nails in front of Himeko so she could clearly see that he liked it and was as calm as can be. At this point, I do not even need to give Kumason anything at all when I dremel his nails but I do anyway because he loves his peanut butter.
