Coconut Oil and Your Dog

I have always loved the smell and taste of coconut oil. I often put a couple of spoonfuls in my rice cooker and it gives the rice a wonderful sweet nutty taste.  In doing a lot of reading, I discovered that coconut oil is not only good for humans, but pets as well. The best part is that it tastes delicious, is low in calories compared to some other oils, has many health benefits, and it tastes great right from the jar.  You can add it to your favorite recipes or simply spread it on a piece of toast. The sky is the limit as to how you want to use it!

Kumason loves it from a spoon as you can see.

You can also apply it topically.  In the winter months, I frequently give Kumason a paw pad massage, gently rubbing the oil into his pads.  Coconut oil is said to have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral qualities. If your dog has itchy and/or dry skin, it can help with this too as it has good moisturizing properties. You can buy coconut oil basically anywhere. I like to buy it at a health food store. I buy the fresh pressed virgin, whole kernel unrefined oil.

If you decide to feed it to your dog, make sure that you start out by giving a small amount at first such as 1/4 teaspoon for a small dog or in my case having a large Akita, 1 teaspoon.  As with any supplement you introduce to your pet, it's always good to check with your veterinarian.

There are a lot of good articles written on coconut oil which go into more detail about the benefits. I hope this short blog helps spark your interest in coconut oil.
